In Carthage, Texas on a Tuesday night, August 22, 1950, during a tent revival under the direction of Bro. O. H. Griffith of White Oak, a group of people who confessed themselves to be Missionary Baptists entered into the organization of a new Missionary Baptist Church.
Several visiting preachers were present at the revival, which formed a council. This council consisted of the following ordained ministers: O. H. Griffith, A. J. Kirkland, A. W. Smith, W. A. Ingram, R. E. Rogers, O. W. Tresinger, Marvin Francis, Alfred Croy, Van George, Clifford Bell, Doyle Harrison, O. F. Reed, W. G. Griffith, and Robert Robe.
Bro. O. H. Griffith was elected moderator. Bro A. J. Kirkland was elected to preach at this service taking his text from Matthew 16:19, bringing an impressive message on church origin and church authority.
Bro O. H. Griffith stood as moderator and asked all who desired to go into the organization of a church to come to the front. A good number moved forward immediately. The moderator then read the church covenant as found in the "Baptist Way Book", pages 89-90. The church covenant was adopted by 14 whose names are as follows: Mr. J. H. Adams, Mrs. J. H. Adams, Betty Adams, Mary Hurley, Martha Holland, Mr. J. A. Cochran, Mrs. J. A. Cochran, Mondie Adams, Ernestine Adams, Mr. J. L. Heaton, Mrs. J. L. Heaton, Syble Burns, Mr. E. M. Andrews, and Mrs. E. M. Andrews.
Bro. W. G. Griffith was asked to lead in the dedication prayer. Bro. O. H. Griffith then read 12 Doctrinal statements for adoption by the newly formed church. These statements were read from the "Baptist Way Book" pages 79-80. These statements were properly moved and seconded, then unanimously voted to be adopted.
The Church went into conference to attend business. Mrs. James Holland was elected church clerk and Bro. Jake Heaton was elected church treasurer. A possible name for the new Church was discussed. The Church unanimously adopted the name "Carthage Missionary Baptist Church" of Carthage, Texas.
Bro. O. H. Griffith then extended the privilege of the Church to ask if anyone who desired membership to the church to come forward. The invitation song was "Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow." New members that joined were: Mr. G. L. Holder, Mrs. G. L. Holder, Mr. Jesse R. Alexander, Mrs. Jesse R. Alexander, and Ray Adams.
